Universal Credit, the brainchild of Iain Duncan Smith, is one of several wide ranging reforms introduced by the Conservative Government as part of its Welfare Reform Act (2012). It will replace a number of key benefits, and whilst it presents an opportunity to improve the welfare system, its implementation is doing just the opposite. Stafford claimants are racking up rent arrears and even facing the prospect of eviction whilst waiting for their first Universal Credit payment.
